Mariana: Faithful to its principles
From Ouro Preto you get the opportunity to visit Mariana, one more colonial town, travelling in an old train called Smoking Mary (although this is a diesel engine; the original steam train connects Tiradentes to São João del Rei). The time schedule is well thought to leave time enough for you to visit the town and the Cathedral and follow a short church-organ concert at the Cathedral, which boasts of a priceless orgão, made by a guy bearing the impossibly German name of Arp Schnitger. It is a different experience hearing this thing play. Not many people can make it work. Its air tubes go one floor down, and their sound somehow made me think of some imminent catastrophe: preferably the end of the world.
Highlights of the day: Lovely city, nice pictures, impressive concert. The end of the world was postponed
Downsides: Boring train. Should have bought one more wooden angel from Edwyn.
